A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Lots to see and explore both in the main town eg museums, churches & the archeological park then on Ortigia where history abounds. Plenty of little restaurants to be found up narrow alleyways on Ortigia which are well-lit and have a good atmosphere. Lots of walking required but mostly level with only a few slopes down - & of course back up! - towards the shore but lots of little shops, some touristy but others more interesting like ceramics to distract you. Great views from the shoreline or promenade that runs round the headland so lovey sunsets to view. Felt very safe & people helpful if you need directions. Food-wise - if you like fish, you'll be in heaven plus the usual Italian pasta & pizza plus tasting the Caponnata is a must. Gluten free, vegetarian & vegan folks are catered for to an extent - apps and guidebooks are handy to find places. Without rushing or going to the beach we arrived on Monday and left on Fri and that was plenty of time to see everthing we wanted. Enjoy!

Ortigia Island is a beautiful place, lots of great architecture, very clean. Interesting sites to see and many boat trips available to take you around the island. There are other places of interest in Siracusa and public transport to take you other parts of Sicily. Many places to eat and if you don't mind walking other sites outside of Ortigia Island are within 30/40 minutes walking.

Visiting the archeological park is very nice, I recommend going early in the morning (8.30AM) before big tourist groups start arriving.
Ortigia is also a great place to go: besides sightseeing objects, I particularly recommend via Cavour with lovely small artisan shops.
A Putia near Fontana di Diana seemed to be a small diner appreciated both by locals and tourists. Good food, reasonable prices, ok service.

Ortigia is amazing, so much great food, and lovely to walk around. There isn't more than a day's worth of sight-seeing on the island, plus the Archaeological sites in Siracusa, but it is an excellent home base for day trips around south-east Sicily. And perfect for a relaxing holiday - coffee and a pastry in front of the duomo, a walk around the island and a little shopping (mostly touristy stuff unfortunately), and a gelato looking out over the water on the promenade. Very friendly people, lovely architecture and history around every corner, fantastic restaurants, and even in February, SUN!

Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history.
Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history. The old part of the city on Ortigia island is full of beautiful old buildings and archaeological sites.
There are many good restaurants and bars and by and large it is relatively cheap.
We rented a car; there are many worthwhile places to visit within an hours drive, including Etna. In the summer a car is essential if you want to get to the many beaches in Sicily

What a great city for a 4 day stay.
What a great city for a 4 day stay. We loved Ortigia, the Archamides outdoor interactive museum, etc. We also ventured off to Taormina and Isola Bella for the most beautiful views. Much prefer this city to Palermo which was dirty and congested.
Great place to stay - excellent wifi speed, water pressure in the shower (not always a given in Sicily), and heating (I visited in February when was quite cold outside). Easy communication with the owner and she let me to arrive an hour earlier than the official checking-in time. In a strategic place in the city - the old city is 10 min walk from the accommodation, while Archaeological Park of the Neapolis as well as San Giovanni catacombe is 15 min walk (other direction), so you don't need to use public transport.
We really enjoyed our stay there. The owners were great, welcoming. The place was nice with outside pool. Breakfast was absolutely fantastic as the pastries was homemade, I was always looking forward to next morning.
Only thing what was not that good for us, we haven't had a car ( seems like a mistake in all Sicily) if you not planing known places and cities.
But we get to Siracusa by the bus pretty easily. And the coast around property was stunnin, and highly recommend to visit Punta della Mola.
Truly one of the best apartments I have ever rented on booking. Pietro and Loredana are so hospitable, kind, and thoughtful. The setting in Ortigia is so unique- an ancient apartment with modern touches, close to the water, and the apartment is somehow incredibly temperate (even though it is so hot outside in the summer). Sitting in the courtyard, I could hear distant church singing every evening.
I am so grateful I got to stay here. I felt more comfortable here than anywhere else in Sicily.
The host was exceptionally helpful. We were at the close of 3 weeks in Sicily and a bit tired. His aid with location a driver, finding restaurants and local spots of interest, and clarifying any questions we had about the room made our stay easy and fun as we explored Ortigia, a beautiful small island with some of the major historic sites in Siracusa. If you want the ambiance of a valued traveler being hosted in an authentic Siracusa home, this accommodation is for you!
This stay was one of my best during a 4-week tour of Sicily. The room was spacious, modern and had a super clean and fresh feeling. Checkin and checkout were well organized. Breakfast was great. Plenty of bottled water, fruit juice and limoncello to be had, if desired. Location on Ortigia Island was perfect - near outdoor market and historical ruins. Plenty of parking available, for a 15 euro fee for 24 hours. Great view of Greek ruins and town from balcony.
Charming Hotel with an excellent location in the heart of Ortigia. Angelo was very welcoming and helpful not just with the hotel issues but even with information about the place and he even arranged a boat excursion for us. Breakfast was super good with a lot of variety (way more than what to expect from a 3 start hotel in Sicily)! Rooms where very clean and spacious. Would definitely re-stay in this hotel if visiting Siracusa again! Highly recommended!
Breakfast was very good , very rich . The location was good , walking distance to Ortigia. The rooms are very well designed and comfortable. The hotel and rooms were very clean. During one week in Sicily this is the best hotel which we have accommodated compare to Palermo and Taormina hotels which were at similar price levels . The hotel has very good fish restaurant bu the sea and in the center. Strongly recommended.” Onda Blue and Onda blue by sea”
We had a fantastic stay! The location was very central, and it was easy to get around the city. The parking was also convenient, and it was about a 10-15 minute walk to the hotel. Alberto gave great recommendations for places to visit in the city - some of our best meals in Sicily! We also loved our morning coffee and breakfast on the terrace. Highly recommend!
Everything! This accomodation is the best. We spent 2 days here. We had our room on the - 3th floor, meaning that the sea started just outside our window. Beautiful! This little hotel was so good that we just didn't want to leave it. The owners and the staff are super kind and nice. The breakfast is excellent, the best we had in our 8 days in Sicily.
The place was brand new, tastefully done and very welcoming and cosy. It is located in a charming little courtyard right in the heart of Ortigia with easy access to all major sightseeing points. The studio was well heated in January which is not always the case in Sicily, and it has all necessary amenities for a short stay.
The apartment was perfect….in fact the best accommodation we had in Sicily. Incredible location with fantastic balcony overlooking a beautiful small piazza. The apartment was stylishly decorated with everything you need. Helen was a fantastic host and Ortigia is amazing…..we would return in a heartbeat.
Beautiful location and spotlessly clean apartment. Owner picked us up from the station, which was very thoughtful. Worried about the hard mattress, but we both actually liked it by the end. Ortigia is beautiful and it was a lovely end to our time in Sicily.
Grazie Mille
Everything about the place was FIRST rate. The only reason that I'm being honest is because we don't plan on visiting Sicily again, too much else to see in this world. This place should be packed because of its staff, value, location....am I gushing about the place?
Great location and quick walk into Ortigia and Syracuse. The host was great and gave us lots of information and tips on where to go. Found parking just outside of the apartment which was also great! The room was great for a couple of days away and exploring the area
The host waited for us at the apartment, showed us beat spots in syracuse, Ortigia was a 20 min walk, Gaia was very helpful during our stay by helping us with information.
In the fridge had some complementary snacks and drinks which was very thoughtful.
The loveliest and most special accommodations we had in our three weeks in Sicily. Eva went above and beyond, with her time, enthusiasm and expertise, in making our stay in Scicli exceptional. The property is magnificent, and a highlight of our trip.
The building is very charming and the facilities including the washing machine were super helpful after a long trip in Sicily. Lea and Luca are also super helpful and wonderful hosts. Will recommend this place to all my friends and family.
Salvo was the best host we’ve had. He ensured everything was always clean and gave us many recommendations for the city and Sicily as a whole. He even facilitated a scooter rental for us. Thank you so much!
The property was amazing! The view from the balcony was so beautiful. The host was very welcoming and helpful. We really had a great time and it was definitely one of the best places we stayed in Sicily.
Loved it here! Fantastic location, right in the heart of the old city. Breakfast was really so AMAZING!!! Our favourite for the whole trip to Sicily. Beautiful room and communal areas. Wonderful stay!
